Cingular Launches Mobile Version of MySpace.com

U.S. cell phone carrier, Cingular Wireless, has unveiled its own mobile version of MySpace.com, the internet’s most popular social networking service.

Cingular subscribers will now be able to read and respond to MySpace messages, write blog entries, upload new photos, and view and search for new friends over the airwaves, at a cost of $2.95 per month. MySpace videos won’t be immediately available with the cell phone service, but they are expected to be added sometime in 2007.

Nortel Hopes to Involve WiMAX in Future Profitability Plans

Canadian telecommunications equipment manufacturer, Nortel Networks, has confirmed that it is on track to meet an important operating income target of $1.5 billion in 2008, but acknowledged that its 2006 performance may be a disappointment to some shareholders.

“There is a commitment, there’s a path for us to go from a break-even, a loss position, to be a $1.5 billion operating margin company in 2008,” said Nortel CEO, Mike Zafirovski at a recent news briefing in Hong Kong.

Fiber Optic Broadband Penetration Continues to Grow Rapidly

The number of North American households with direct access to fiber optic data networks has grown to over 1 million, according to a report by Render Vanderslice & Associates.

As of September 30, 2006, there were a total of 1,011,000 fiber-fed homes in the United States and Canada, representing a 51% increase over the past six months and a 213% increase over the past year. Fiber now passes a total of more than 6 million North American homes (at the curb) and is being marketed to more than 5 million of these, the report said.

The UK’s largest telecommunications provider, BT, has launched its ВЈ100 million entrance into the pay TV market, providing over 40 digital television channels, ample Video On Demand content, and built-in DVR functionality to record programming on request.

BT Vision, as the new service is called, will aim to undercut cable and satellite competitors such as NTL and Sky by offering its “V Box” to customers at no cost. Customers will need to sign-up

Chinese Government to Issue 3G Wireless Licenses Sooner Rather than Later?

Speculation is raging in the world’s most populous country that the Chinese government is getting ready to issue its first 3G wireless licenses later this month, after a senior industry executive hinted to that effect earlier this week.

The Chinese government still hasn’t released a timeline for the development of 3G networks, except to say that airwaves licenses will be granted to wireless carriers “very soon.”

Ericsson and Intel to Collaborate on Mobile Broadband Solutions

As demand grows for cellular broadband access on mobile computing devices, Ericsson and Intel have inked a new deal to capitalize on this rapidly expanding market.

“The mobile PC with embedded mobile broadband represents an exciting and strong revenue opportunity for mobile operators, both for access and services,” commented Ericsson executive vices president, Bert Nordberg.
